Commutators

We have been producing moulded commutators for over 50 years under the trade name 'Nelco' – originally for the company's own use in special purpose machines which demanded commutators of a quality that was not then commercially available.

Quality, flexibility and service are the keynotes of Polaron's approach to design and manufacture and a well-equipped development department makes it possible to produce initial small quantities with the minimum of tooling charge.

Nelco commutators have a high mechanical and thermal stability enabling them to be used in applications unsuitable for the traditional mechanically assembled types. The majority of commutators produced supply the aerospace and defence industries throughout the UK and Europe.

There are occasions when it is necessary to use different techniques or materials. There is a complete flexibility of approach at Polaron, ranging from development contracts to the use of materials such as platinum in what would otherwise be perfectly standard commutators. The prototype shop makes it possible to produce small quantities by a variety of means; it is not unusual for us to machine individual copper segments from solid material to enable customers to build prototype motors within weeks of original design submission.

It is standard practice to test all commutators for dialectric strength from segment to segment and from segment to sleeve. Additional tests are carried out by the customer, and the relevant test specification is always agreed to with the customer before manufacture.
